In late July 2011, Mark Lester Bernardino, Laboratory Officer of the Tropical Disease Foundation, Inc., was sent to its collaborating partner in Taiwan for ten weeks training on Mycobacterium tuberculosis Genotyping Program. This was held at the Reference Laboratory of Myobacteriology, Center for Disease Control, Taiwan Department of Health. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Ruwen Jou.

The training conists of Basic molecular techniques that are presently used for fast and more intricate Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection for diagnosis and reasearch purposes. On hand training of Laboratory Molecular Techniques such as Spoligotyping and Mycobacterial Interspersed Repetitive Units (MIRU) were included in the Program. The letures, demonstrations, application techniques and mentorship were spearheaded by Ms. Pei Chun Chuang of the CDC Laboratory.

Understanding the fast molecular evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, TDF continues to upgrade its capability and expand its knowledge.
